Strengthening People´s Organisations

Background:

Participation of people is essential for sustainable development. The informal and formal organizations, operating at the community level are commonly called as community based organizations (CBOs) or local institutions or people's organizations (POs).

The genesis of the people's organizations is rooted in the principle that people possess wisdom and capacities to manage their own lives. People's organizations are essential for ensuring sustainability of the programme interventions.

The people's organizations help in reaching out to the community. They help in planning and execution of the programme activities and ensure that the project benefits reach to the community.

MITTRA is increasing capacities of the people's organizations.

Roles of People’s Organisations:

The people's organizations act as intermediary structures to reach out to the community. They also help in planning and execution of the program activities. They ensure that the services and benefits are utilized appropriately for all needy section of the community. Thus the POs operate as extended centers of MITTRA at field level. MITTRA's major role is to increase capacities and capabilities of the Pos, so that they gain more control over decisions that shape their lives.


Activities undertaken by People's organizations:

  • Identify poorest families.
  • Ensure project inputs.
  • Capacity building of the community.
  • Monitor project progress.
  • Build capacities for micro enterprises and income generation activities.
  • Develop linkage with financial institutions.
  • Develop backward and forward linkages.

Coverage area:

  • People´s organization are established in various programmes in Nashik, Thane, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Pune, Raigad, Dhule, Yevatmal, Nanded, Amravati, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Gondia and Hingoli district.

Highlights

The People's Organizations are mainly engaged in collection and processing of cashew and mangoes obtained through the wadi programme. Other activities on small scale are marketing of onion, strawberry, custard apple and horticulture grafts.

Agri-business activities in the program area are routed through the Vasundhara Agri- horti Producer's Company Limited, Pune. (VAPCOL) having branch office at Peinth. 21 Farmers Producer Organizations, located at different locations in Maharashtra area are members of VAPCOL. In the year 2012-13, two new Vibhags from Vidarbha, have joined VAPCOL.

VAPCOL is mainly involved in value addition and marketing of the cashew and mango. The capital required for cashew and mango procurement is also provided by VAPCOL. The farmer producers organizations are involved in procurement and primary processing of cashew and mango.

The turnover of VAPCOL's Peint branch has crossed Rs. 1.8 crore mark. VAPCOL has a cashew value addition unit of 1 Metric Ton per day capacity at Peint. Attractive packing of cashew in pouches and small tin boxes has been introduced recently.

15 cashew processing units have been are set up at different villages. Each unit has a capacity of processing 50 metric ton of cashew per year. The units are managed by the Farmers Producer Organizations.

New initiative of VAPCOL at Farmers Producer Organization's level are oil ghani (oil extraction unit), vegetable nursery, solar dryer for drying raw mangoes for producing amchur (raw mango powder), paddy reaper and power tiller. Recently cashew cutting and peeling machine has been introduce to improve quality of the finished product.
